Mechanics of a Two-Stroke
The
engineering behind the way two-strokes work is pretty cool.
Essentially, the shape of the exhaust uses pressure (sound) waves from
combustion to expel fuel while creating pressure to supercharge the
piston. The early two-strokes had straight-pipes that tuners would cut to
the perfect length so the motor would run optimally at the desired
engine speed. Over time, tuners learned 'pressure waves could be created
to help pull spent gasses out of the cylinder' and 'that the speed of
these waves is more or less constant, though it's affected slightly by
the temperature of the air'. That means, a single length pipe is built
for a motor at an ideal RPM and the powerband is thin. So the question
was, how to get a better timed reverb from the pipe without changing the
length?
The change in
the shape of the pipe diameter changes the negative pressure waves
(reflections). By gradually increasing the diameter of the tube, a
gradual, more useful negative wave could be generated to help pull spent
gasses out of the cylinder, thus increasing the engine power throughout
the whole rev range.
My Thoughts
Coming off track WOW!!
The
Husqvarna TC125 is quite an impressive little bike. Feels more like a
superpower mountain bike! So smooth and dives right into the corners. It was my first time riding a two-stroke so feeling
out the power band was a new experience. Definitely a bit spoiled since
the TC125 is one of the best on the market today. Big thanks to Earl and 3Brothers Racing. Also, a big thanks to Women's Dirt Bike Training Academy for sending
me into the wind with a good grip of the fundamentals of dirtbike riding. Hopefully more riding this awesome little (but powerful, 40 HP) bike soon!
Got
to ride with friends this weekend at Lake Elsinore Motocross Park. We were happily equipped with *EXTRA DIRT BIKES* so everyone had a ride! Gage took some amazing pics of all of us. The
kids track was having an event so there were a lot of kiddos in the pits
with their bright gear and cute little bikes.
As I am a curious person, I had to read about how a two-stroke worked. Learning about the science behind how the exhaust system worked was so cool and I like to share my findings here on the blog.
🤟stay rad, friends🤟
